She sat on the ground of her farm yard shelling peas. In spite of the capital, Bujumbura, being just 60 kilometers away, she had never gone there. She told me about the history of her country, the World Wars, the genocides and kings. When I told her that I came from a monarchy, she looked up and said she wished that my country would also develop and, like Burundi, become a civilized republic! She died at 101. I hope that just a bit of her dignity, wisdom and beauty comes through in this image.
